I'm a huge Robert Rodriguez fan and have loved
virtually everything he's done...except for one flick, Spy Kids
3D. I didn't get to see that one until it had already made $100M+
in the theater and came out so disappointed that I didn't even bother
to write a review...it was awful. I equate that film to sitting in
a living room watching someone else play a video game. Well, this
flick is more of the same, but not nearly as bad. I loved the Spy
Kids films despite not liking one of the lead actors performances
in all 3. At least here the actors all seem well cast. Taylor Lautner
as Shark Boy is particularly good as it's obvious in the action scenes
that he's an incredible martial artist...those aren't digital effects!
Taylor Dooley as Lava Girl is also enjoyable. But the main attraction
here is George Lopez...or at least the character he plays, Mr. Electric.
It's just a hilarious looking villian that's loads of fun. We were
in a screening where there were quite a few kids and they were mezmerized...and
in the end that's all that matters. There's nothing here for parents
and/or grown-ups in general. You'll probably have a better time watching
your little ones react to the screen than watching the sometimes annoying
3D (how is it that this technology hasn't improved that much?). Parents
all over the nation are gonna be dragged to this one, and honestly,
you might get bored, but your kids will probably like it despite the
incredibly slight story. Oh, and when I say kids, I mean little ones...probably
10 and younger. |
